Trout Fishing

It's official - Fischer is just as crazy about fishing as Hayden. All weekend all I heard was "Wake up and go fishing" or "We go fishing in the baby boat" (the baby boat is Gary's aluminum boat) and he was very adamant that we bring pop, doughnuts and chips with us.

I think that fishing is about the food for Fischer but he had a blast casting the line in and out of the water (no hook). Hayden is so patient! He'll sit and watch his line and then when he gets a bite he is all professional and knows exactly what to do. Of course, Hayden picked out his own lure and it was the HOT LURE! He out fished everyone and went home with his limit. Too bad he lost the lure in the trees. Fischer and Dad went up the next day and were shut out.

Where is spring?

A few months ago Shannon asked me to go with him on a trip to Phoenix for one of his business trips. At the time I really wasn't too interested after taking a trip to Mexico and then to Washington DC - it just seemed like too much work. However, I got to thinking that it would be a few days of some adult time and the hassle started to seem worth the effort. My Mom and Dad agreed to watch the boys and I booked my trip (using vouchers - thanks Yapta!). It was April 19th this weekend and it snowed at my house on Saturday and Sunday. April 19th!!!!! So after attempting to work in the yard in my ski clothes I am MORE than ever looking forward to 4 days in Phoenix!

Washington DC - During Spring Break no less!

Okay, what on earth was I thinking when we made arrangements to go to Washington DC during Spring Break? We just returned from a week in Washington DC along with every other 7th and 8th Grader from the East Coast. It was a succesful trip as I returned with just as many kids as I left with and no one got lost or hurt.

I am pretty sure it is not really what a 2 1/2 and 6 yr old would call a rockin' vacation but we were able to instill a little culture into the boys. Hayden wanted to know why all the women in the Art Museum didn't have shirts on -- Shannon didn't really have a good answer but I suspect that men are just pervs dating way back to th 1400's. He also told me the story of how Jesus died and came back to life when he saw the pictures of the Crucifixion. I'm pretty sure he didn't learn that from a fishing trip so he must be getting some religion at the The Firs which is a good thing.

My Mother and Father-in-law as well as Shannon's Uncle Wade and Aunt Helen also ventured out with us. We saw it all in the 5 days we were there! The Capital Building, Aerospace, Natural History, Art, and Indian Museums. Then we hit the monuments and Arlington National Cemetery. We also hit the DC Ducks (one of those tours in the car that is a boat) and a Washington Nationals Baseball game. We had one day in Baltimore with a kids day at the Kids Museum and walking the docks with a stop at the ESPN Zone for lunch (fyi...great place for kids as it is really loud!). We also spent an afternoon in Columbia visiting with my Aunt Dana, Uncle Dan and my Cousins Allison and Nick.

The kids will tell you their favorite part was the Metro. Riding the train with a stubborn and independent 2 year old is interesting. He must do the escalator himself and he wants to do the ticket and get on / off the train without help. This is all great until it is rush hour and he easily gets lost in the sea of legs. Oh, Fischer will probably tell you he liked the M&Ms too. I used them as a bribe for the better half of the trip. "If you hold my hand across the street, I'll give you an M&M." To which he would often reply "sure!" or my favorite "I know that Mommy!"

Shannon he'd probably tell you the shooting at the Safeway on Friday night or the crusing up to the local liquor store at the same time 3 cop cars pulled up with guns drawn were his favorite parts. My favorite part was just being with my family and getting to order take out every night. Of course, I really had an awesome time at the Capital. We had a special tour, shout out to Uncle Dan for that of course! We were able to take 8 of us and walk to the top of the Capital Dome. I bet you didn't know that the current dome is not the original? That it is not really structurally part of the building but is more or less a facade. Also, I bet you didn't know that you can walk around the top! It was a very special tour. Not to mention that the Capital was buzzing that day with Clinton, Obama and McCain were all "in the house" to listen to General Pateras speak. They travel with a fairly large posse of secret service and police.

March snow showers bring fish!

Happy April. I have decided to start writing a little blog about our family. I thought it might be fun to write something on an ongoing basis instead of once a year at Christmas time. I will be adding more pictures and videos onto the site as I find the time and I'm hoping it will inspire me to be more active with the camera.

So here goes the update. March was a busy month of fishing, whose surprised? The boys even did a trip out by themselves last weekend. Only the hardcore ventured out. It was about 32 degrees and there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground at our house when they left. They fished ALL DAY in the wind, snow, rain and down right miserable weather to come home with a solo 7 lb Blackmouth. Fischer went out with 3 diapers and came home with 3 diapers and lived on chips, pop and doughnuts. So I think he is hooked on fishing. I can guarantee you that there were no other kids out in the sound that weekend! If they can survive that they can survive anything.

We are getting ready to take a 2nd family vacation on Saturday. We are venturing to Washington DC to visit the East Coast Beard family as well as take in the sights. Karen and Gene as well as Wade and Helen are coming with us so I am sure we'll have our far share of giggles and heated card matches.

If you want to see Hayden's first published picture - here's a link http://www.fishnjul.com/2008photos.html Scroll down towards the bottom and you'll see his picture with his big fish.
